How This Therapeutic Approach Is Different
Relational Life Therapy (RLT) isn’t about symptom management or emotional venting.
It’s about facing the real issues quickly, directly, and with compassion.
Through the lens of RLT, we will:
- Move from blame to accountability
- Cut through power struggles
- Work with the parts of you that resist change
- Build fierce intimacy through truth-telling and repair
This isn’t about staying stuck. It’s about showing up and doing the work; together.
Research note: Evidence for Relational Life Therapy (RLT) is emerging. The Relational Life Foundation is conducting multi-site outcomes research using APA-aligned methods. See the outcomes study · About their research program · APA practice guidelines.
Results Over Talk Therapy - RLT Relationship Skills
A direct, no-blame approach that gets to the heart of the issue fast.
Sessions are online via secure Zoom from my office in Red Deer, serving couples across Alberta.
If you’ve tried traditional therapy and felt like you just "talked in circles," you might be a therapy refugee. You don’t need more empathy, you need accountability, clarity, and practical skills you can actually use when the session ends.
You’re tired of the same old "talk therapy" that doesn't change anything.
You may be:
- Frustrated by therapists who just "nod and listen"
- Stuck in the same power struggles despite months of sessions
- Looking for a specialist who will tell you the truth
- Ready to take radical accountability for your part in the dynamic
- Wanting a roadmap, not just a place to vent
No matter how long you’ve been stuck, RLT offers a direct path to relational mastery.
What We Work On
We move past the "story" of your relationship and get into the
relational skills required to maintain a healthy connection. We focus on the "how" of your interactions, not just the "what."
You’ll learn how to:
- Make "invisible labor" visible without starting a fight
- Communicate needs with clarity instead of resentment
- Realign household and relationship roles for sustainable balance
- Rediscover appreciation and genuine connection
- Stop the reactive cycle of burnout and shutdown
What Makes This Work Different?
This isn’t just about making a chore chart. This is practical, honest work using Relational Life Therapy (RLT). We look at the power dynamics and the "relational stances" that keep you stuck.
You’ll learn how to:
- Identify your "Relational Stance" (and how to shift it)
- Speak the truth with love and respect
- Listen without getting defensive
- Use "The Feedback Wheel" to repair conflict in minutes
- Give and receive appreciation that actually lands
What Makes RLT Different?
Relational Life Therapy (RLT) is a direct, no-blame approach. Unlike traditional models, I won’t just sit back and watch you argue. I will actively intervene, provide honest feedback, and teach you the specific tools required for a successful partnership.
It is built on:
- Accountability: No one gets a pass. We look at how both partners contribute to the loop.
- Directness: We cut through the noise and get to the heart of the issue fast.
- Practicality: You leave every session with a skill, not just a feeling.
What You Can Expect

Common Questions About RLT Relationship Skills
What is Relational Life Therapy (RLT)?
- RLT is a direct, evidence-informed approach to couples therapy developed by Terry Real. Unlike traditional models, it doesn't just facilitate conversation - it actively intervenes. You'll learn specific relational skills, get honest feedback on your patterns, and leave each session with something concrete to work on.
How is this different from regular couples therapy?
- Most couples therapy is passive - the therapist observes and reflects. RLT is active. I will name what I see, interrupt patterns that aren't working, and teach you specific tools in the session. If you've been in therapy before and felt like you talked in circles, this is a different experience.
We've tried therapy before and it didn't work. Why would this be different?
- That's exactly who this is designed for. "Therapy refugees" - couples who've done the work and didn't get results - often do well with RLT because it doesn't rely on insight alone. It builds skills. Insight without practice doesn't change behaviour. RLT gives you both.
How many sessions will we need?
- Most couples experience meaningful change in 4 to 6 sessions (8 to 12 hours of work). That's not a guarantee - it depends on how long patterns have been entrenched and how committed both partners are to doing the work between sessions. We'll have a clearer picture after the intro session.
What does a session actually look like?
- We start where you are - whatever is live and present for you that day. I'll ask focused questions, name what I observe, and introduce a specific tool or framework when it's relevant. Sessions are structured but not scripted. You'll leave with clarity on what happened and what to practice next.
What does it cost?
- Sessions start at $200 per hour. A full session is 120 minutes. The introductory session is free - it's the best way to assess fit before you invest anything.
