Choosing the Right Marriage Counselor

Why the Right Fit Matters More Than You Think

Not all therapists are trained to work with couples. And when your relationship is on the line, the wrong kind of help can do more harm than good.

As someone who’s been on both sides of the therapy room—I know this firsthand.

From My Personal Experience to Yours

Before I became a marriage counselor, I was in the same place as many of the couples I now work with—hurt, disconnected, and not sure what to do next.

I tried therapy. A few times, actually. But most of what we got was vague advice, side-by-side individual treatment, or someone who simply didn’t know how to work with the relational dynamic. We left sessions more frustrated than when we arrived.

It wasn’t until I found Relational Life Therapy (RLT) that everything changed.

What Most Couples Don’t Realize

Many therapists are trained in individual mental health, not relational repair. They’re taught to focus on diagnosing and treating what’s “wrong” inside one person—not the interaction between two.

Here’s the truth:

Marriage counselling is its own discipline.
It requires a completely different skillset than working with individuals.

Yet many couples unknowingly book with therapists who’ve had little or no formal training in couples work. The result? Shallow tools, looping conversations, or worse—bad advice that pushes the couple further apart.

What to Look for in a Marriage Counselor

  • ✔️ Someone who works exclusively with couples
  • ✔️ Deep training in relational frameworks like RLT
  • ✔️ A clear, structured approach—not just open-ended talk therapy
  • ✔️ Someone who challenges both partners, without blame or shame

What I Offer (And Why It’s Different)

I don’t offer general therapy.

I work exclusively with couples through the lens of Relational Life Therapy—a powerful, no-nonsense approach designed to get underneath your patterns and create real, lasting change.

I bring:

  • Over 40 years of lived relational experience
  • 23 years in behavioral safety and conflict resolution
  • A focus on practical tools, real conversations, and radical honesty

Couples across Alberta consistently report major breakthroughs in just 4–6 sessions (8–12 hours total)—plus Homeplay to keep the momentum going between sessions.
