Why I Offer a Free Intro Session

Most therapists charge $200–$250 for a first session and many couples never return.

Why?

Because they didn’t feel heard, or the approach didn’t fit.

I do things differently

I offer a free 30-minute introductory session so you can get a real sense of how I work before investing your relationship, time, energy, and money. No pressure. No commitment. Just an honest conversation to see what’s possible for your relationship.

Is This the Right Fit? What Happens in Your Free 30-Minute Intro Session

This 30-minute session isn’t just a pitch; it’s a window into how relationship therapy can start shifting things fast. It’s a real conversation designed to help you make an informed choice.

This session is also an assessment - for both of us. I'm listening to understand your specific situation: what's breaking down, how long it's been building, and whether my RLT approach is the right match for what you're facing. Some couples need what I offer. Some need something different. I'll be honest either way. That honesty starts here.

Online sessions are ideal for busy couples juggling family, shift work, or rural living. If finding time to drive to an office is one more strain on your relationship, virtual therapy removes that barrier.

Serving Red Deer and Couples Across Alberta

  • No driving. No parking. No waiting rooms.
  • No taking time off work. No scrambling for child care.
  • No sitting awkwardly in an office wondering who’s listening.
  • Online couples counselling means you can do the work from wherever you feel most comfortable.

Many couples find me by searching for “online couples counselling near me” in Red Deer and Central Alberta. Whether you're in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, or a smaller community, the matching process is the same - and so is the standard of care.

Here’s how it works:

For the first 10 minutes, I'll explain how I work and what makes my RLT approach different from most couples therapy you may have heard of. I specialize exclusively in relationship and marriage counselling - nothing else. That focus matters when we're assessing whether this is the right fit for your relationship.

I specialize exclusively in relationship and marriage counselling.

What I offer is considered "self-help" by the industry and by most insurance carriers because relationship growth is not seen as a medically treatable concern.

This is not about diagnosis or symptom management.
This is about real change - fast, deep, and built on radical honesty.

After that, I’ll ask a few questions to get a sense of what’s going on in your relationship and what you’re hoping for.

We’ll talk about what working together could look like, and you’ll have space to ask anything you need to know.

Throughout the session, you’ll hear me use one phrase over and over again:

“If you choose to work with me…”

That’s intentional. There’s no pressure here.
I want you to
have a conversation together after this session; to decide whether this is a fit. Only then should you book your first full session.

You’ll walk away with:

  • A clear understanding of what I offer and how RLT works
  • An honest assessment of whether my approach is the right match for your specific situation
  • Clarity on what working together would actually look like
  • The time and space to decide - together, without pressure

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the intro session free?

  • Most therapists charge $200–$250 for a first session. Many couples never go back. Not because the work wasn't good - but because they didn't feel heard, or the approach didn't fit. I offer the intro session free so you can get a real sense of how I work before you invest anything. If it's not the right fit, I'll tell you honestly and point you somewhere better.

What actually happens in the 30 minutes?

  • We talk. You tell me what's been happening, how long it's been building, and what you've already tried. I ask a few focused questions to understand the pattern underneath the conflict. By the end, you'll have a clearer picture of what's going on and whether working together makes sense.

Is this just a sales call?

  • No. I'm not going to spend 30 minutes convincing you to sign up. If the fit is right, it will be obvious to both of us. If it isn't, that's useful information too. The goal is clarity - for you and for me.

What if only one of us wants to come?

  • That's more common than you'd think. One partner is often more ready than the other. You're welcome to join the intro session solo. We can talk about what's happening, what you're hoping for, and whether couples work makes sense at this stage.

Can we do the intro session online?

  • Yes. Most couples across Alberta join by secure video. It works just as well as in person for a first conversation. If you're in Red Deer and prefer to meet face to face, that's available too on Mondays and Thursdays.

What happens after the intro session?

  • If we both feel it's a good fit, we book your first full session and get to work. I'll give you a sense of what to expect, how many sessions most couples need, and what the process looks like. If it's not the right fit, I'll say so directly and suggest other options.

Why the Right Match Matters

Most couples who quit therapy don't quit because they weren't trying. They quit because the approach wasn't right for them, or the therapist didn't truly understand their situation.

Unlike platforms that match you to whoever is available, this assessment is done by the same person who will work with you - Alberta's only fully certified RLT specialist working exclusively with couples. What you experience in this session is exactly what you get in therapy.

That's what this session is designed to prevent.

During our 30 minutes together, I'm assessing three things:

  • Whether what you're dealing with - infidelity, disconnection, stepfamily conflict, communication breakdown - is what RLT addresses best
  • Whether my direct, honesty-first approach is something you can both work with
  • Whether you're both ready to do the kind of deep work that creates lasting change

This isn't a sales call. It's a mutual evaluation. I want you to walk away knowing whether this is the right fit - not just hoping it might be.

Getting the Most Out of Your Online Introductory Session

A little preparation goes a long way.

To get the most out of your counselling sessions with me, it helps to take a few minutes before we meet to make sure your setup is working smoothly. These sessions are powerful and they rely on a clear connection, good lighting, and sound that lets both of you be fully heard. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating the right conditions so you can focus on the real work - not the tech.

Zoom Session Tips for Couples

Whether this is your first session or your tenth, here’s how to set yourselves up for the best possible experience:

  • Test your setup ahead of time using Zoom’s built-in test tool:
    👉
    https://zoom.us/test
  • Download the Zoom Workplace App for better video and audio quality:
    👉
    https://zoom.us/download
(The browser version works, but has limited controls. The app gives you more stability and flexibility.)
  • Use the device that feels most natural (laptop, tablet, or desktop) but make sure:
  • Both of you are visible on camera - side-by-side, eye-level, with the camera around head height
  • Lighting is in front of you, not behind you (avoid sitting with a bright window or lamp behind you)
  • Internet connection matters:
  • If using Wi-Fi, sit as close to your router as possible
  • If available, an ethernet cable offers the most reliable connection
  • Audio clarity helps connection:
  • Go into your Zoom Audio Settings and set “Noise Suppression” to “Low”
(This helps reduce the loss of emotional tone in your voices)
  • Check your environment:
  • Choose a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted
  • Close other apps or tabs on your device to reduce distraction and improve performance
  • You’ll receive a unique Zoom link in your session confirmation email from me. That link is secure and personalized for your appointment. You can join from the app or your browser, but again, the Zoom app is preferred for a smoother experience.
